  • Mersenne’s Clavichord

    Mersenne’s Clavichord

Not one example of an original French clavichord survives. The instrument played on this historically important recording is a new construction following the specifications published by Marin Mersenne in the 17th century. It’s therefore the only example of how early French keyboard music may have actually sounded to the first audiences. A range of works from the 16th and 17th centuries are presented, all French except the well known Toccata by Sweelinck, whose music was prevalent around France at the time.

Also by Terence Charlston is The Harmonious Thuringian (DDA 25122).

  • Madrigali: Fire and Roses

    Madrigali: Fire and Roses

An intensely beautiful programme, delectably performed. Paul Mealor’s choir gives a stunning performance of original 16th century madrigals and some modern counterparts, including the fabulous Madrigali of Morten Lauridsen. Of Mealor, we have the awesomely beautiful ‘Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal’ cycle, of which the first movement was personally chosen by Prince William and Kate Middleton (now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) as the musical centerpiece of the April royal wedding service (re-set to the words of ‘Ubi Caritas’).

This is the original version, conducted by the composer, and thus 100% authentic.

Paul Mealor’s work is also available as a download-only single, Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal (DDS 29002). It was also featured in the soundtrack of the award-winning documentary “Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen” (DVD 003).

  • Sacred Hearts & Secret Music

    Sacred Hearts & Secret Music

This CD stands on its own merits as an exceptional programme of early sacred music, transcribed for and performed by the etherially beautiful voices of Musica Secreta and Celestial Sirens. However, like their earlier CD (DDA 25062) it has an added rationale, as the ‘virtual sound-track’ to the superb new novel ‘Sacred Hearts’, by Sarah Dunant. The music on the CD refers directly to many of the scenes and events in the book, allowing the reader/listener to more fully absorb themselves into the ancient world and characters so wonderfully portrayed.

‘Sacred Hearts’ is published in the UK by Virago, and in the USA by Random House. The book and CD have been heavily featured in the media in the UK including BBC Radio ‘Woman’s Hour’, the South bank Festival and so on.

  • Apostle of Ireland – an Office for St. Patrick

Apostle of Ireland – an Office for St. Patrick

This disc is dedicated to Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, as is the music itself. With texts newly translated from the original sources, this is a programme of 15th century plainchant, genuinely originating in Ireland, recorded here for the first time after extensive scholarly research. A major addition to the early sacred music repertoire. Performed by Canty, the renowned female-voice ensemble of Cappella Nova, with William Taylor (clarsach).

With full texts in Latin and English.

  • Alessandro Grandi: Motets in 5 Voices / Music from “Fallen”

Alessandro Grandi: Motets in 5 Voices / Music from “Fallen”

Alessandro Grandi is widely regarded as one of the finest composers from Italy in the early 17th century but his music itself is little known. This premiere recording of his 16 Motets for Five Voices rectifies that and demonstrates his extraordinary musical powers. Also on the CD are musical items from the soundtrack of the film/live/multimedia work “Fallen”, a collaboration between Musica Secreta and playwright Fiona Mackie.

Also available by Musica Secreta: ‘Sacred Hearts Secret Music’ (DDA 25077).

  • Gossiana – A Tribute to John Goss

Gossiana – A Tribute to John Goss

Subtitled, “A 1920s anthology of song” this album is not filled only by music composed during the 1920s, but is made in tribute to one of Britain’s greatest, and now almost forgotten, singers: John Goss. At the height of his career in the 1920s, Goss was a close friend of Warlock, Moeran and other composers, and ahead of his time in giving mixed recitals, including all types of song from lieder to sea shanties. This is reflected in this CD. Giles Davies played Goss in a recent film directed by Tony Britten.

  • Woodworks

    Woodworks

For those who think the recorder is just a boring instrument for young schoolchildren, here is the proof of the opposite!

This CD contains classic works by Handel, Vivaldi and Couperin but also new and exciting works by contemporary composers. Accompanied by a fine chamber ensemble, Australian performer Tamara Gries shows, in the words of Prof. David Tunley (University of Western Australia) that “the recorder is truly a fine and expressive instrument that finds a deserved niche in music of our own century as well as in that from earlier times”.

  • Hail Mary

    Hail Mary

Reflections on the Rosary including traditional Russian Catholic chants, and poems by Regina Derieva. Performed by Regina Derieva, Fr. Abraham of the Monastery of the All-Merciful Saviour, Ekaterinburg, Russia and the Akathistos Choir, conducted by Pauls Putnins.

  • Franciscan Road

    Franciscan Road

An anthology of hymns and chants, celebrating the story of salvation, and the work of the Franciscans who have been custodians of the sacred shrines of the Holy Land since the 13th century.

Performed by the choir and community of St Saviour’s Monastery, Jerusalem.

Tracks include the Marian Litanies, hymns by Kunc, Bourget, Fortunatus and Iaccarino and 14 traditional and Gregorian chants.

  • My Song is Love

    My Song is Love

Performances which are both polished and committed, from this amazing choir, including a few well-known sacred pieces by Durufle, Stainer, Stanford; new works by brilliant Scots composer Martin Dalby, gems from John Tavener and Alan Rawsthorne, and a selection of traditional Scottish songs in super new arrangements by Ken Johnson.
