Maria Curcio was one of the most influential and sought after piano teachers of the latter part of the 20th century including among her students such luminaries as Martha Argerich, Peter Frankl, Radu Lupu, and Mitsuko Uchida – and Anthony Goldstone. Following Curcio’s death in 2009 at the age of 89, this is Goldstone’s tribute to his mentor – a fine recital in its own right, and works all of which have a connection to her, in some way or other. This is the first ever recording of the lovely Waltzes composed by Artur Schnabel. As a bonus we include one of the very few surviving recordings made by Maria Curcio, where she accompanies Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in a Mozart aria – a performance first broadcast in 1957.

Christopher Langdown Live in London
This 2-CD set contains the whole of an acclaimed recital at the Wigmore Hall, London, on 9 June 2009 by the awesomely talented young British pianist Christopher Langdown, who gives phenomenal performances of Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata and other virtuoso works, as well as the world premiere of his own Deo Omnis Gloria, a very fine set of three neo-romantic pieces conceived in the late 19th-century style. This debut album shows yet another remarkable talent in the world of modern pianism.

Unaccompanied
It takes a particular and extreme level of skill and dedication to perform virtuoso works for unaccompanied solo violin; suffice it to say these are qualities held by George Zacharias without doubt. This is a tour-de-force of musicianship and technique – and wonderful music too. Bartok’s Sonata is presented in its original version and of the two awesome Paganini works, the ‘God Save the King’ Variations are very rarely heard.

Haydn : Stabat Mater, Libera Me etc.
Haydn’s wonderful Stabat Mater is far less well known than those of Pergolesi and other composers; this recording made in Paris in 1978 was a pioneering version using reconstructed scores and revised by renowned musicologist and scholar H C Robbins Landon. Also included is the even rarer LIBERA ME, only discovered in the mid 20th century. The soloists are: ANNA MARIA BONDI (soprano), CLAUDIA EDER (mezzo), AXEL REICHARDT (tenor) and KÜRT KRATTINGER (bass) with the Choral Philippe Caillard.
As bonus tracks, we include classic 1964 recordings of the 44th Symphony (Trauersinfonie) and the rare Double Concerto for Violin and Harpsichord, which features violinist Jacques Francis Manzone and harpsichordist Françoise Petit.

Unheard Mozart
Following Anthony Goldstone’s surveys of rare and previously unrecorded music by Schubert and Beethoven (some original, some in arrangements) and the groundbreaking disc of Mozart piano duo works made with Caroline Clemmow (25046) this is perhaps his most ambitious project to date, including two completely new sonatas, realised from sketches left by Mozart, and several other newly-completed pieces. Approved with enthusiasm by Mozart scholars, including Julian Rushton who wrote the booklet notes, these wonderful new completions will soon be part of the standard Mozart repertoire. Gossiana – A Tribute to John Goss
Subtitled, “A 1920s anthology of song” this album is not filled only by music composed during the 1920s, but is made in tribute to one of Britain’s greatest, and now almost forgotten, singers: John Goss. At the height of his career in the 1920s, Goss was a close friend of Warlock, Moeran and other composers, and ahead of his time in giving mixed recitals, including all types of song from lieder to sea shanties. This is reflected in this CD. Giles Davies played Goss in a recent film directed by Tony Britten.

Mozart on Reflection
Mozart wrote one complete sonata for two pianos, the famous D major, here in a superb performance. But he also left sketches of a second work in B flat, which has been completed and realised by Anthony Goldstone. Together with Goldstone’s transcription of the Adagio and Rondo, originally written for glass harmonica, and arrangements by Busoni and Grieg, this is perhaps one of the most fascinating and unusual programmes of Mozart available.

Beethoven : Favourite Piano Music
Beethoven’s three most famous sonatas have received hundreds of recordings. Why another, especially from a company like Divine Art which usually avoids duplicating repertoire?
Because we believe that each piece of music demands a performance tailored to the composition, and that recently, every recording of a major work seems to sound the same. Beethoven’s sonatas are fiery, storm-filled works which require playing not only of consummate skill but also total passion and commitment.
